Computer Science, contrary to popular belief, does not consist primarily of programming. In education, programming is emphasized because having a solid foundation in the implementation of ideas is necessary to legitimately argue for or against an idea, policy, or design. Computer Science also focuses heavily on the topics of policy, network architecture, security, risk analysis, and overall system design, just to name a few. As a transfer student, I had the unique opportunity to experience two completely different Computer Science programs. I can safely say that Virginia Tech had a far superior program and opened up doors for me that I never thought I would be able to enter. By going through the co-op program, I was able to get seven months real-world work experience at IBM. I was a part of undergraduate research for three semesters and was able to do research on computer topics I was interested in. I had an excellent research experience my senior year that has been crucial to my success. I also had great experiences with the AWC (Association for Women in Computing), especially as Women in Computing Day chair, which honed many leadership and organizational skills. My year of being an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant was also very beneficial for extending my skills for explaining material. My three internships gave me a fabulous view of the CS world.
